Case: Gaudi’s Garden – Seamless Experience Design During Restoration at Casa BatllóHow do you maintain a world-class visitor experience while the building itself is under scaffolding? When Barcelona’s iconic Casa Batlló began an extensive renovation of its rear facade, the challenge was to ensure that the guest journey remained as captivating as the architecture itself.
In collaboration with Entertainment Development, I led the creation of ‘Gaudi’s Garden’—a temporary, multisensory exhibition designed to turn a construction phase into a unique storytelling opportunity.
The Strategy: Turning Restoration into NarrativeRather than hiding the preservation work, we chose to celebrate it. The exhibition was designed to give visitors a "behind-the-scenes" look at the meticulous craftsmanship required to maintain a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Immersive Scenography: To counteract the industrial feel of a renovation site, we designed a lush "vertical garden" using 45 different species of foliage. This created a soft, organic atmosphere that mirrored Gaudi’s own obsession with natural forms.
  • Multisensory Storytelling: We moved beyond the visual by integrating a specially composed soundscape and custom-developed scents, ensuring the temporary space felt like a premium, permanent attraction.
  • Expert Insight: I curated a series of interviews and historical graphics focusing on the four pillars of Gaudi’s craft: iron, wood, glass, and stucco. This provided the "educational depth" that high-end cultural tourists expect.
  • Engaging the Next Generation: For younger guests, we developed and installed custom "hologram boxes." These miniature landscapes projected animations that explained Gaudi’s complex architectural logic in an accessible, playful way.
The Result'Gaudi’s Garden' successfully maintained high visitor satisfaction scores during a potentially disruptive period. By blending high-tech holograms with tactile craftsmanship and organic scenography, we proved that even a temporary exhibition can deliver a deep, emotional connection to a brand and its history.
